Sherry Shorts: Unsettled En Rama
The Big Fortified Tasting held on Friday in London showcased a few recently bottled (some for the event itself) en rama releases. While most demonstrated wonderful aromas, the wines generally felt a bit disjointed. Now I’m left to wonder whether the 2016 en rama crop is likely to be disappointing or if a few more weeks in bottle will allow them to settle down and fulfil their potential.
I’ve often railed against the perceived wisdom of having to drink en rama within six months of bottling but recognise that ignoring such a timeframe should be a ‘drinker beware’ decision. If these releases do start to come round over the next few weeks, maybe we should now start asking whether en rama sherries need a ‘don’t drink before date’?
In general, I’m very curious as to how En Rama will fall in to place over the next few years as the Consejo seems a bit begrudging to really get behind it but realize they need to as it’s an excellent gateway for some people and hipster sommeliers love the shitz out of it, not to mention myself as well, usually.
Agreed.
The more I hear stories of successful en rama verticals and of wines that are developing beautifully with some bottle age, I think this will be an interesting aspect to watch over the coming years.
Agreed. If you follow the evolution of older styles like Goya XL you would be really suprised
